What's a good running pace?

Every runner asks it sooner or later: am I fast? The honest answer is that a โ€œgoodโ€ pace depends on the distance, your experience, your age and even the weather that day. But averages exist, and they're useful โ€” as a reference point, not a verdict. Here's what typical paces look like from 5K to the marathon, and how to work out yours.

Pace, speed โ€” a 30-second refresher

Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance: 5:30 min/km means five minutes thirty seconds per kilometre. Speed is the inverse โ€” distance per hour. 5:00 min/km equals exactly 12 km/h. Runners think in pace because it maps directly onto race maths: at 5:41 min/km, a marathon takes four hours, full stop.

Average paces by distance

Compiled race results give a fairly stable picture of recreational running worldwide. Treat these as orders of magnitude:

  • 5K โ€” most beginners finish between 30 and 35 minutes (6:00โ€“7:00 min/km). A regular runner lands around 25 minutes (5:00 min/km); under 20 minutes is club level.
  • 10K โ€” typical finish times sit between 55 and 65 minutes (5:30โ€“6:30 min/km). Under 50 minutes (5:00 min/km) is a solid recreational benchmark; under 40 is competitive.
  • Half marathon โ€” the global average is around 2h10โ€“2h15 (about 6:10โ€“6:25 min/km). Breaking 2 hours (5:41 min/km) is the classic milestone.
  • Marathon โ€” worldwide averages hover around 4h20โ€“4h30 (6:10โ€“6:25 min/km). Sub-4 (5:41 min/km) puts you ahead of most finishers; sub-3:30 is a serious amateur time.

Averages mix all ages and conditions. A hilly, hot or windy race can easily cost 15โ€“30 seconds per kilometre โ€” compare yourself to a course, not just a clock.

What actually moves your pace

  • Experience โ€” the largest factor by far. Most runners improve steeply during their first two or three years of consistent training.
  • Age โ€” peak endurance performance typically sits between 25 and 35, but the decline is slow: many runners set lifetime bests in their 40s.
  • Distance โ€” your 5K pace is not your marathon pace. As a rule of thumb, each doubling of distance slows your sustainable pace by roughly 6โ€“8%.
  • Conditions โ€” heat above ~15 ยฐC, wind, and elevation gain all cost time. A 300 m climb adds several minutes for most runners.

Getting faster: what works

No secret: consistency beats intensity. Three to four runs a week, most of them genuinely easy (you should be able to hold a conversation), one faster session โ€” intervals or tempo โ€” and a progressively longer run. Most runners who train easy 80% of the time and hard 20% see their race pace drop within a couple of months. Track your progress with real data: your GPS files hold your pace history, kilometre by kilometre.

What is a good pace for a beginner runner?
Between 6:00 and 7:30 min/km is entirely normal when starting out. The goal at first isn't pace โ€” it's running regularly without injury. Speed follows consistency.
Is 5:00 min/km a good pace?
Yes. 5:00 min/km (12 km/h) gives 25:00 on a 5K, 50:00 on a 10K, and about 1:45 on a half marathon โ€” faster than most recreational finishers.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by the pace in minutes. 6:00 min/km is 10 km/h; 5:00 min/km is 12 km/h; 4:00 min/km is 15 km/h. The pace calculator does the conversion both ways, including min/mile and mph.
Does average pace matter more than heart rate?
They answer different questions. Pace measures output; heart rate measures cost. For racing, pace is what counts. For day-to-day training, effort (heart rate or feel) is often the better guide.
