How to trim a GPX track

Forgot to stop your watch on the way home, or started recording ten minutes too early? Those stray sections skew the distance, average pace and elevation of your outing. Cutting them takes seconds, and the activity gets its real statistics back.

When should you trim a track?

  • The recording kept running during the drive home.
  • You started the watch before the warm-up or the real start.
  • A long pause (coffee, transport) skews the duration and average pace.
  • You want to isolate a specific portion of the outing to analyse or share.

How to cut the start or the end

  1. 1

    Open the trim tool

It accepts GPX, FIT and TCX files.

  2. 2

    Drop in your file

The track and elevation profile appear immediately.

  3. 3

    Set the two sliders

Adjust the start and end; the kept portion is highlighted on the map, with stats recalculated live.

  4. 4

    Export the trimmed track

Download the result in the format of your choice.

Trim my GPX track

Distance is rebased to zero and laps are recalculated over the kept portion: your statistics stay consistent after the cut.

Check before exporting

The live preview prevents bad cuts, but you can always reopen the exported file in the viewer to confirm the track and stats match what you wanted.

Check my track

Conversely, if your outing is split across several files, what you need is a merge, not a trim.

FAQ

Does trimming change my statistics?
Yes, and that's the point: distance, duration and elevation are recalculated over the kept portion only, with distance restarting from zero.
Can I trim a FIT or TCX file?
Yes. The tool accepts GPX, FIT and TCX, and you choose the export format of the trimmed file.
Can I remove a pause in the middle of the activity?
Trimming keeps one continuous portion between a start and an end. To remove a chunk in the middle, trim the two parts separately then merge them.
Is my original file modified?
No. You download a new file; the original stays intact on your device, and nothing is sent online.
